An Update: Going on an Elimination Diet, Starting the 131 Diet Weeks 1-2

Update: Going on an Elimination Diet. Starting the 131 Diet Weeks 1-2

About a month ago I attempted an elimination diet by eliminating gluten, most dairy, and artificial ingredients. You can read more about it here. It lasted a week. Yikes! I felt like crap and ended up basically binging on Chipotle and pizza ha! My body was probably detoxing but I couldn’t take it. I was so sick of feeling sick…and just like a hangover, junk food temporarily makes me feel better. A few weeks went by eating my usual crappy diet, and I finally decided to sign up for the 131 Diet. If you are not familiar, the 131 Diet is a method created by Chalene Johnson where you phase your diet. It can help with inflammation, joint pain, leaky gut, regulate hormones, etc.. I have a suspicion that many of my current health problems are linked to my diet, so this program sounded perfect to me. I have been following Chalene Johnson for quite some time and just love her so I am really trusting this process.

My Current Diet on the 131

Currently I am eating a Ketogenic diet which means high fat, moderate protein, really low carb. I am focusing on high quality meats from Butcher Box —-> discount code here for free bacon and $20 off!, eggs, veggies, and oils. The best thing about this program is you can truly customize to you. Eliminate what you want, keep what you want. The program basically provides you with all the information you need, and you can make a decision based on what is best for you. Since I am desperate for answers I eliminated A LOT. It really sucks…but I am slowly feeling better. Based on the information provided to me I decided to cut out the following:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Nightshades
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  • Sugar (the bacon I have has maple sugar in it but is >1 gram. I ran out of my Butcher Box bacon so this is temporary until I receive my next shipment)
  • High Carb foods
  • Gradually decrease caffeine intake. Currently drinking half-caf Americanos.

I have found myself eating a lot of eggs, sausage, and bacon because its delicious and easy to prepare haha.

Results So far

I have before pictures I will post in a future update (check out my Instagram for updates on this process!). I did not take measurements-though I probably will soon, but according to the scale I have lost 5 pounds in 8 days. All inflammation, water weight, and bloat!

What is Next?

The 131 Diet releases information a week in advance so I am currently in the Ketogenic phase. Next week we have the option to do a fast, and I believe the week after that we may start introducing foods to check for reactions. First on my list is whole organic milk! I miss my morning latte more than anything!

Other Factors of the Diet

I was hesitant to eliminate so many things at once since reintroducing will take time, but as I mentioned before, I am desperate to figure out what is going on with me! About a week or two before starting 131, I also started taking a very low dose of Celexa to help with my anxiety. While I do not think anxiety is the cause for my symptoms, I figured it is worth a try. So while I do not have much of an appetite while eating a Ketogenic diet, it could also likely be due to the Celexa.

I am so excited to check back and let you know what has worked for me and what hasn’t!

Have you tried a program to improve energy levels? If so, what worked? What didn’t?

I am currently doing the keto diet and not feeling hungry is a side effect! I eat a lot less than I used to and rarely feel hungry.

I’ve also started 131. I’m on my 1st week of seriously restricting carbs & finding it difficult to keep my macros at the right percentages! Any favorite recipes?

You can do it!! It is really challenging in the beginning. I find just putting meals together rather than uses recipes helped for me. For example, hamburger patty with grilled onions in avocado oil or sausage with grilled onion. I have bacon and eggs cooked in the bacon grease almost every morning!
