As a mom I know sleep trumps everything else. Luckily my kids have (mostly) been sleeping through the night for a long time now, so it should be easy for me to get in my 7-9 hours. If only it was as easy as it sounds! Without a routine I wind up on my phone way past my bedtime, and allow myself to wake by the screams/chatter of my kids. I don’t know about you but this starts my day off on the wrong foot. Nothing is worse than being abruptly woken by the dog scratching on the door, a child screaming, or even just banging all their toys against the wall. It makes an alarm much more pleasant now, doesn’t it? I have found by creating a morning routine, I am able to start my day in a much more controlled, positive way. Below are 3 easy steps to create a morning routine.
Make A Plan
I always try to fight my planning tendencies. In an effort to be more “go with the flow” I stopped planning things for a while. That did me (and my family) absolutely no good. It made me so cranky and feel out of control. Instead of fighting my natural planning tendencies I decided to go with it. I thought about my day and what I want it to look like. I have the most amount of energy in the morning, so I knew I needed to utilize that time for blogging or studying for my group exercise certification. In addition to using the morning as a productivity time slot, I also knew I wanted to take the quiet dark morning time to center myself and start my day out right. A quick gratitude, yoga stretch, and meditation is how I dreamed of starting all my days. With all that in mind I created the following morning routine:
- Set alarm for 6am
- Complete a 5min yoga (to keep it easy I will pick out a new one each week. Right now I am doing 5-Minute Morning Yoga – Yoga With Adriene
- Complete a mediation. I usually pick a 2-4m mediation using the Meditation Studio app (free!)
- Gratitude Journal: My planner has a box for gratitude. I will list 3 things I’m thankful for.
- 16oz of water. Between these things I will drink 16oz of water
- Review to-do list created the night before. Make changes if necessary
- Create a blog post-or whatever I decided needs to be done first thing
Prep the Night Before
The tasks listed above are honestly really easy to execute, but without planning the night before, it is easy to hit the snooze button and skip everything…awakening to the sounds of my screaming children. To prevent this from happening I plan the night before with the following:
- Set my alarm.
- Leave my headphones out so I can listen to the Yoga and mediation without waking others in the house.
- Place my yoga mat on the floor
- Have a glass of water filled
- Place my computer, notebook, and planner on the table where I plan to do my work
The key is making everything extremely convenance where you practically do not have an option of not doing it!
Be Open To Making Changes
When I originally created my new morning routine, I had planned on changing into workout clothes, putting my contacts in, brushing my teeth, and practically getting ready for the day prior to starting the yoga video. On day 1 I found this was not going to work for me. It was too many steps to take before starting the priorities of my routine, so I cut it out and it has worked wonderfully since!
